New Series: Tips for maintaining your roof over winter
Each month we will be giving you some tips on how you can look after your roof. This could be maintenance or by just making a few checks from the ground. Here is our first seasonal tip to get you started.
Part 1. Keep your guttering clear over winter
Looking after your gutter isn’t just a job for winter however it’s a particularly good idea to check if they are clear leading into those colder months. During the warmer months rain can be an issue as well as overflow issues if they are blocked but bring in ice and things can get damaged. A clean gutter is much less likely to pick up damage that a neglected one. Dampness inside the home can also be a clue that you may have a blocked gutter.
- Check your downpipe is clear by walking around your house in the rain and checking that no water is overflowing or running down the building
- Take care when clearing leaves and moss from guttering as the guttering may have collected sharp objects
- Look for signs of damage that could lead to future problems
- If your downpipe doesn’t go directly into the ground make sure the drain is clear of leaves to avoid damp issues
